    I have been referred for tests to investigate possible cancer - what does this mean for me?

Referral timeline

Day 1

  • Your GP refers you to hospital for tests.
  • The hospital will normally contact you within 10 to 14 days.

Day 10

  • Ring the hospital if they have not contacted you after 14 days.

Day 14

  • It's really important that you go as soon as possible.
  • You may not recognise the phone number or it may be witheld. 
    • Have questions prepared.
    • Have a pen and paper ready.

By day 28 you will have been for your tests and have your results.

Day 28

  • You do not have cancer.
  • Contact your GP again if you still feel unwell. Cancer diagnosed and treatment options discussed.
